HOT ! ROMAN LEGIONARY’S SWORD BELT MOUNT NECKLACE MID-LATE 4TH CENTURY AD

Original sword belt mount from a Roman legionary’s sword belt, mid to late 4th century AD. See Forum Ancient Coins for virtually identical examples and detailed information. As well as decorative, these mounts were, capable of protectively absorbing the impact of a sword blow. Thus, they are in fact, a form of Roman armor. This example is particularly elaborate with hand engraved details and probably worn by an officer.  It is bronze about 1 3/4” (1.83”) height made by the open face mold technique with bordered edges and circular medial engraved with a cross. This is the period when Christianity was the official religion of the Roman Empire. Surface with some wear and texture from burial. The silver surface is restored and mounted on an 18” silver neck chain for modern wear. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
