Detailed information on Vintage Eames fiberglass armchair from Vitra eggshell white
As an entry in the 1948 \"International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design\" held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Charles and Ray Eames submitted a chair with a one-piece, ergonomically shaped metal seat shell and an interchangeable base. The concept was progressive at a time when chairs primarily consisted of a seat, a backrest, and fixed legs. Although the design won second place, its expensive material made mass production impractical. Searching for an alternative material that was malleable yet robust and suitable for industrial production, the Eameses discovered polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass, a novel material for the furniture industry. The Fiberglass Chairs were launched in 1950 and quickly gained immense popularity due to their versatility and exceptional durability—a popularity that continues to this day. This eggshell-white Eames Fiberglass Armchair features a deep, chrome-plated H-base. According to the pictures, there are three small circular holes on the seat that have been newly filled.
