Detailed information on Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug 7\' x 3\'5\"

Size: 7 x 3.5 ft.

Origin: Caucasus

Circa: 1940s

Material: Pure Wool

This beautiful antique Caucasian Shirvan tribal wool rug is a masterful representation of the refined artistry and symbolic richness of the Shirvan weaving tradition from the eastern Caucasus. Characterised by a clean, structured layout, it features three bold octagonal medallions arranged in a vertical sequence, each enclosing intricate geometric floral motifs. The central medallion set against an ivory field provides a striking contrast to the surrounding rich crimson and midnight blue tones.

The field is populated with stylised tree-of-life and arrowhead motifs, hallmarks of Shirvan symbolism, each rendered in a harmonious palette of soft blue, brick red, saffron yellow, ivory, and black. Framing the composition is a richly detailed border ensemble, with inner and outer guards showcasing hooked diamonds, wave patterns, and reciprocal “running dog” designs, culminating in a red main border filled with vibrant multicoloured lozenges.

Woven entirely from hand-spun wool and dyed with natural pigments, this rug boasts exceptional colour retention and crisp, tight knotting, a reflection of the technical finesse associated with Shirvan weavers. Its symmetrical design, tribal iconography, and vibrant clarity make it a collector-worthy piece, ideal for adding a touch of Caucasian heritage to any space.

Authentic vintage and antique Caucasian rugs are hand-knotted with wool. Each one is an exceptional work of art and one of a kind.

Pictures are taken in natural light to portray the most realistic colours possible. Due to these rugs\' handmade and preloved nature, slight imperfections and flaws are not defects.

Our rugs are professionally restored, and the fringes secured, ensuring many more years of life. In addition, we advise using a rug pad with a grip back to keep your rug in position and to smooth out any wrinkles from shipping. Using a rug pad will also safeguard your carpet from deterioration and therefore extend the life of your rug.

Our rugs are professionally cleaned.
