Tulips (Liliaceae family) grew wild in the Tien Shan Mountains of Central Asia. In 1554, the Sultan of Turkey sent the first tulip bulbs to Vienna. Their intense colors added to “Tulip mania” in the 1630s where a single bulb cost as much as a house.
